Can I be tested for HIV without my informed consent?

No person can be tested for HIV without their informed consent.

A person can be tested for HIV regardless of their consent only in the following circumstances:

  1. If ordered by a court,
  2. For screening in licensed blood banks,
  3. To test body parts for research or therapy, or
  4. If done anonymously for surveillance or epidemiological purposes.

Informed consent means that before you agree to an HIV test, you must be properly informed about it: what the test is for, its risks and benefits, and what alternatives exist. Your consent must be given freely, without any pressure, force, or misleading information, and in a language you can understand. Nobody can trick or force you into agreeing.
