What steps must be followed before my doctor tells my partner about my HIV status?

Your doctor or counsellor can only notify your partner if all of the following conditions are met:

  • They genuinely believe your partner is at significant risk of getting HIV from you; and
  • They have already counselled you to tell your partner yourself; and
  • They are convinced that you will not tell your partner on your own; and
  • They have told you in advance that they plan to inform your partner; and
  • They tell your partner in person, after counselling them.
